Omega-9 – Why No Hype?

Saturday,July 7, 2012 @ 10:05

We have all heard of Omega-3 and Omega-6. But have you heard of the other one, Omega-9? Well my guess is you probably have not. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are also known as Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). This is because the body cannot produce these EFAs and must get them from dietary sources or supplements. They also enjoy the term polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). But we have all heard of them because we need to get them from dietary sources and are essential to maintain a healthy body.

Now Omega-9 is not considered a PUFA because it is a monounsaturated fatty acid. It is also not considered an EFAs because the body can produce this fatty acid, but only if your body has ample amounts of Omega-3 and Omega-6. If it does not have this supply, then Omega-9 becomes an EFA and must be obtained from dietary sources.

So if you are getting your Omega-3 and Omega-6, then you do not need to worry about getting your Omega-9. If not, getting Omega-9 is easy because there is a wide source of dietary products that will provide you with the required amount.

Benefits Of Omega-9

There are several benefits that have been documented that the body receives when obtaining the proper amount of this. They are:

It helps to lower cholesterol
Helps prevent heart disease
Improves the immune system
Hardening of the arteries is minimizedSources of Omega-9

If you do not get enough EFAs then there are other sources where you can get your needed dose of Omega-9. These sources are:

Olive oil and olives
Various nuts are also good sources
AvocadosA lack of Omega-9 is indicated by dandruff, hair loss, dry skin, dry eyes, stiff and/or painful joints are just a few of the symptoms you can develop.

Conclusion

Omega-9 does not get as much hype as Omega-3 and Omega-6 because if you get the required amount of EFAs you will create the required amount of Omega-9. Even if you do not get enough EFAs, getting Omega-9 from dietary sources is easy.

Though not promoted as much as the EFAs, you can see it is important to get the required amount of Omega-9, you just do not have to work to get it like you do EFAs.
